The set of drivers and applications that are part of Guest Additions are located in the VirtualBox installation directory and, depending on the operating system, we must perform some steps or others, steps that we will show you later. Guest Additions is a set of device drivers and system applications that are responsible for optimizing the operating system to offer the best possible performance and usability.
Time zone synchronization, thus solving one of the common problems when creating virtual machines. Custom video drivers to take advantage of the resolution offered by the host machine and, incidentally, an accelerated performance system.
Shared clipboard, allowing users to copy and paste text and files between the virtual machine and the host operating system. Full support for mouse use in the guest operating system. Shared folders, which allows the user to exchange files between the host and guest operating systems as a common storage unit. Is it normal?Īlso, there is nothing in the Control Panel nor in the Programs menu related to the guest additions, or at least nothing I could find.ĭo you really have to guess by yourself when a new version is available, and install it like the first time you install guest additions? (unless you're always vigilant when the system starts up and you readily click on the warning that appears for a few seconds, assuming it was about an update) I tried to click and rightclick on the tray icon of guest additions (which by the way is an EMPTY tray icon: some symbol would be nice you know it is the guest additions just because when you mouse-hover on it a label appears), but nothing happened: neither clicking on it nor right-clicking on it did any menu or dialog appear. Today I upgraded to VirtualBox 3.10, and after starting the machine with the windows guest, a baloon message appeared next to the tray icon area saying something about guest additions, but I was not quick enough to read it and click on it.
I would expect the guest additions to automatically detect when there's a new version available and to ask me whether i want to install it. When you upgrade Virtual Box to a newer version, what's the "normal" way of updating the guest additions? (which I guess may need to be updated sometimes with a new VB version and sometimes not)?
